Afternoon
The route follows the coastal road and passes through the beautiful beaches of Glifada, Vouliagmeni and Varkisa, residential areas of the city, to the southern tip of Attica: Cape Sounio, which boasts one of the most spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and where the remains of the Greek temple dedicated to Poseidon stand in a striking position overlooking the sea. According to myth, it is the place from which Aegeus, king of Athens, jumped into the sea when he saw his son Theseus’ ship with black sails, as he believed the hero had died trying to complete his mission. Actually Theseus had only forgotten to hoist white sails, which would instead symbolize the success of the venture, and for this reason the name Aegean Sea was derived.
At the end of the guided tour of the Temple opportunity to walk freely on the rocky promontory of Sounio and enjoy the fantastic landscape.
