Enjoy and experience the famous Greek cuisine and traditional recipes, feel the excellent and unique scent of national wines and combine it all with immemorial visits to the most important historical monuments of Greece.
Athens – Arachova – Delphi – Kalambaka (L-D)
Pick up from your hotel in the center of Athens and departure for Delphi. Arrival in Arachova village early in the morning, where you will have the option to visit the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, where the oracle of Apollo spoke and where the site of the omphalos, the “naval of the world” was situated (supplement charge of 39,00 euro). While at the site, visit the Treasury of the Athenians, the Temple of Apollo and the Museum. For those who will not wish to visit the Temple and the Museum, there will be leisure time in Arachova, a mountain town well renowned for its colorful rugs and carpets. There, you can take a nice walk or stop for a coffee break.
Afterwards, departure for “Argyriou Winery”. The history of the estate dates back to the year 1998, when the first vineyards were planted. In 2002 the first wines, Erohos red and Erohos white, were vinified. Today the vineyards have reached 290 acres, which is enough to meet the demand for wine that comes exclusively from proprietary vineyards. The property currently produces nine different types of wine, placing a special emphasis on the cultivation of Greek forgotten varieties, as well as on the production of high quality wines. In 2009, a pioneering unit with the view to promoting wine tourism was created in Polydroso, operated by the members of the Argyriou family. This enables guests, both to try the variety of wines of the estate in the specially designed place (cellar) and to reside in Polydroso, enjoying at the same time the local cuisine, as well as the various activities that the area has to offer. A great and traditional lunch will follow your wine tasting experience in this spectacular mountain area, in the famous Katoi restaurant. After lunch, you will board the coach to Kalambaka, for dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Meteora – Metsovo (B-L-D)
After breakfast at the hotel, you will visit Meteora, a place standing between earth and sky atop huge rocks, famous for its impressive scenery with ageless Monasteries*, containing priceless historical and religious treasures as well as exquisite specimens of Byzantine art. Once you finish your visit, you will proceed to the small and picturesque town of Metsovo, where you will enjoy a delicious lunch in the central square, under the eternal sycamores! Early in the afternoon, you will visit the vineyards of the famous winery “Katogi Averoff”. The “Yiniets” vineyards are Greece’s highest (950–1050m above sea level). On the slopes of Mount Pindus the seasons unfold at their own pace and the vines take their time ripening. “Yiniets” (the Vlach word for vineyard) are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Traminer, Syrah, as well as the region’s lesser-known indigenous varieties, such as Vlachiko, Gudaba and Pyknoassa. The Katogi Averoff winery is a building of notable architecture. The exterior blends in harmoniously with traditional Metsovo architecture, while the facilities are decorated with unique artwork installations. Later in the evening, during dinner, you will have the opportunity to see the cooking of a traditional pie, demonstrated by the hostess, dressed with the local folk clothing. In addition, you will taste 3 labels of the most interesting wines of the “Katogi Averoff winery” collection. Overnight in the hotel.
*In order to visit the Monasteries, skirts for the women and long trousers for the men are required.
Metsovo – Ioannina – Athens (B-L)
In the morning, after breakfast at the hotel, you will leave early for the main town of Epirus prefecture, Ioannina, an important city of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) and later, of the Ruler of Epirus and of Greece under Turkish occupation. You will make a panoramic tour of the old town, the fortress and the mosques and a wonderful walk on the harbor of Lake Pamvotida. These are a testimony of ancient times, in particular the Byzantine age and Ottoman domination. You will then depart for Athens with lunch stop at the Agrinio area (Kenourgio), at the winery and farm “Thestia”. The region around Kenourgio benefits from a microclimate ideal for viticulture and the geoclimatic conditions result in premium quality wine grapes. Indigenous grape varieties like Malagousia, Assyrtiko and Mavrodaphne and cosmopolitan ones like Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah are cultivated in the vineyards. These wines reflect both the unique terroir of this part of Greece as well as the work of the dedicated team that creates them. Their aim is to develop a small family of eclectic and exclusive wines and to this end, they use traditional production methods and focus on small yields for maximum quality grapes. After lunch departure to Athens via the new “Ionia” highway.
